2. Measuring Your Walls
Accurate measurements ensure you order the right amount of wallpaper. Here’s how to measure:
- Step 1: Measure the height and width of each wall you want to cover, in feet or meters.
- Step 2: Multiply the height by the width to get the total square footage (or square meters) for each wall.
- Step 3: Add the totals for all walls together. We recommend adding 10% extra to account for pattern matching and trimming.
- Tip: Don’t subtract for doors and windows unless they are very large.
If you need assistance, our team can help you calculate exactly how much wallpaper you’ll need.

How to Prep Your Walls for Wallpaper
-
Clean the Walls
Remove dust, dirt, and grease using a mild soap and water solution. Rinse with clean water and let dry completely. -
Repair Imperfections
Fill any holes, cracks, or dents with spackling compound. Sand smooth once dry. Remove any loose paint or wallpaper. -
Prime the Surface
For best results, apply a wallpaper primer or a high-quality latex primer. This helps the wallpaper adhere better and makes removal easier in the future. -
Ensure a Smooth, Dry Surface
Make sure the wall is completely dry and smooth before starting. Wipe away any dust from sanding. -
Remove Outlet Covers & Switch Plates
Unscrew and remove all outlet covers and switch plates for a cleaner installation.
Important Installation Tips
- Check Your Wallpaper: Unroll your wallpaper and inspect for any defects before starting. Make sure all rolls have the same batch/lot number for color consistency.
- Gather Tools: You’ll need a measuring tape, level, pencil, sharp utility knife, smoothing tool, and a step ladder. For traditional wallpaper, have a paste brush or roller and a sponge or cloth for smoothing.
- Start from a Straight Line: Use a level to draw a straight vertical line where you’ll hang your first strip. This helps keep your wallpaper straight.
- Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always read and follow the instructions that come with your wallpaper, especially for paste application or soaking times.
- Pattern Matching: If your wallpaper has a pattern, pay attention to how each strip lines up with the next.
- Work in Good Lighting: Proper lighting helps you spot bubbles, wrinkles, or misalignments as you work.
- For Peel & Stick Wallpaper: Peel a small section of the backing at a time and smooth as you go to avoid bubbles.
- For Traditional Wallpaper: Apply paste evenly and let it “book” (fold pasted sides together) if recommended, to activate the adhesive.
- Trim Excess Carefully: Use a sharp knife to trim excess wallpaper at the ceiling, baseboards, and around outlets.
- Let It Set: Avoid touching or cleaning the wallpaper for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to set.
